I have been wanted to try sewing baby stuff as gifts and decided that a changing pad would be a simple easy first project. The changing pad is a layer of patterned cotton (to make it pretty), PUL (for waterproofing), and minky (something soft for the baby to lay on). There is a strap to keep the pad folded in the bag.

What a great idea! I love the patterns on it. Are those dragonflies? Where did you get the fabric? It makes a great baby shower gift. Good job!

Thank you! yes, they are dragonflies. They seem to be a reoccurring theme (as I previously made needle holders with dragonfly pattern). I sort of made up the pattern as I went along. I had seen a changing pad in a baby store and thought, hey! I could make that.

" PUL, otherwise known as polyurethane laminated fabric, is a lot more technical than just a plastic backing on fabric. The original application is the medical field, and it is still used for this purpose. Like cloth diapers, it is used to replace disposable products with reusable. It provides the waterproof barrier needed in the medical field that can survive multiple institutional washings. The laminate can also be autoclaved, which is a very high heat steam sterilization process, to make it safe for reuse even after it comes into contact with blood or other bodily fluids. "
