First post!

So, we had a pretty bad blizzard yesterday - 40 cm (more than a foot) of snow!! It snowed all day long and at times I could barely make out the house across the street. I kept thinking, this is what it must be like when hell is freezing over. But today is a beautiful day! I went out and took some pictures. Meet Nora! You will be seeing a lot of her, she is my favorite subject. I've always been interested in photography, but I want to go beyond that and learn the basics of photography, taking photos and what you can do in post. I would appreciate any advice and suggestions. Currently, I am using a Sony DSC-H2.

yay! first post! how exciting! i know i said i was going to try to post this weekend (there is still some time) but i didn't do squat. i did go to borders and look at some craft books and am going to order some, does that count? probably not.

anyway, i like your pic. i definitely want to learn more about photography/post processing too, so we should defintely work on that. robinde thought we could do something similar to the 2 ppl we saw on tad---photo/reaction shots and or build photo essays together.

for your photos, i might have included a tiny bit more along the bottom of the frame so that her chin isn't right along the edge---seems to cut off prematurely. i like the rim lighting on her, helps to separate her from the background. if you have full-size images that we could zoom into, that would help too.

do you like your camera?

thanks for the comments! yes, i agree that i need more at the bottom. taking photos of nor is a challenge b/c she moves so much and is never still. especially when i have a camera in my hand. i think i also needed to use a larger aperture to make sure that her whole face is in focus rather than just her nose. about full size images, do we have a limit on memory size? i had a larger image file uploaded, but then i was worried that it would take up too much space.

what 2 ppl are you referring to? sounds like a neat idea

do i like my camera? well, for the most part it does what i tell it to do. maybe it will behave more when i gain a little more understanding. my main issue with this camera is the auto focusing and/or flash. for some reason, the camera gets confused and won't take the picture and i miss the moment.

It would be fun to do a photography reaction series together...maybe when the weather is a little warmer here? It is so white outside right now. I might have to borrow Ian's camera (a Canon 20D) for that. My digital camera (Canon G3) is several years old and has a much slower shutter reaction time. So it's not ideal for action shots or anything that doesn't sit still, like my children.

One of the things I like about this photo of Nora is how you can almost make out your reflection in her eyes. I also love the light dusting of snow on her nose and the light blurring of the background. Looking forward to seeing more of Nora!

yes, let's definitely do a photo reaction series... that's cool that you will be using a 20d, i'm about to inherit one from jrmyst because he is getting a 40d. that should be coming today actually, and then i ordered a 50 mm/1.4 lens that i want to be my primary lens. i might eventually get an xsi b/c it's smaller, but they don't come out to april, and i will experiment with the 20d in the meantime to decide what i want...

yeah, i also liked the snow on her nose... so light and delicate looking.
