Earth Hour 2008
I participated in this year's Earth Hour last Saturday. It was interesting b/c when I looked down my street, pretty much all of the houses had their lights on. I still enjoyed my quiet candle lit hour. I was hoping to knit, but five candles proved too dim. I would need many more. Instead I decided to take some pics of the candles. The second photo is a reflection of the candles on a picture frame.

really neat to see the candles in the reflection. makes me think of a drawing done on the wall of a cave or something.
these are really beautiful photos. i like the warm glow of the candles in the first and the fact that you can see the translucent quality of the wax. i love the idea of the candles being reflected in the 2nd photo as well. it's like making a collage through reflection.
earlier today, my coworkers and i were looking at a photo gallery/exhibition for someone who works at our company. i was saying that the reflection of myself in the picture was distracting but then we started playing around and he took photos of my reflection composited onto the photos. i think his aperture must have been really wide, so he had a hard time focusing so that both my reflection and the image were sharp but it actually worked well to keep my reflection sharp/softer bg. did you have a hard time with that or did it work pretty well? the candles look sharp and the drawing looks softer, but i thought maybe the drawing just had softer lines. in any case, i think it works nicely. nice job!

thanks! i didn't have too much trouble with focusing. maybe because my camera is not as fancy ...
cindy - where was your friend standing with respect to you and the picture?
i think in most cases, he was standing to my right, so towards the screen right side of the image. the composition looked dramatically different from his perspective than mine when i looked. i think i'm still kind of soft in all of the shots, so i'm not sure if there was an issue, he had a fancy camera for sure... your candles look much sharper for example.
