for my photo.a.day today, i decided to participate in the youngme/nowme photo contest. the idea is to start with a photo of yourself as a young child and try to recreate the same photo, but of yourself now. the most important factors should be your pose and facial expression, but other things to consider are clothing, colors, lighting, environment, props, composition, etc.
i was unable to mimic my surroundings exactly since my patio looks nothing like the one from the original photograph and also couldn't recreate the composition of the original photo because my patio was too small to place the camera anywhere else and still fit myself in the photo. i also didn't have clothes that looked similar, so i just wore my current day choice of lounge/sleepwear. the colors were pretty different/distracting, so made both photos black and white, adjusted the levels a little, and added some grain to the new one to try to match the original better.

what a great idea! i especially like the photos with now-adult siblings or friends posing together in the same way. or the photos where the subjects attempted to put on a very similar outfit as what they wore when they were kids.
but like you said with your photo, it can be difficult to recreate the clothing and background scenery. i like the way you adjusted both photos in photoshop to make them more similar in lighting and graininess. you did a great job with your facial expression and posture too. do you have any bobbed wigs? that would have been a funny touch.
i was thinking about trying this idea in a slightly different way. i want to try to replicate a photo of me and my mom using zoe and me. it would be a generational before and after comparison.
that is a great idea, i can't wait to see the results. i might do more, just for fun, not to submit to the contest. i actually do have a bobbed wig---i have several in colors like burgandy, pink, blue, and orange, in fact. it i a really funny touch, maybe i will give it a try... :)
robinde - your idea for youngme/nowme is a great idea. cignoh - hope you will share some of your other ones. i agree, your young and now me facial expression identical, even the posture. i don't have a scanner so i don't think i will be able to participate. :(
for the merit badge one, i propose that someone make a scrabulous one!
sukogirl: you could try taking a photo of your photo---i've done that before with decent results. also, if you don't have time to do one for the contest before the contest ends, someone created a new flickr group so that ppl can continuing creating/sharing after the contest ends: http://www.flickr.com/groups/youngmenowme/pool/
