failed attempt to crochet a bullion circle

Originally uploaded by cignoh

i followed this tutorial that robinde sent me, but something went wrong... there are loops outside of my circle, but i don't think there are supposed to be... also, when i went back to close my circle, i couldn't find the 3rd chain stitch that i made from step 3 of the tutorial. help/suggestions?

* addendum: thanks for the suggestions, robinde! i tried again, and like the results better, it definitely helped to pull on the loose yarn to tighten the bullions as i made them. also, i read the instructions more carefully and realized some stuff i did incorrectly the first time around:

It looks very good for your first try! The bottom half of your circle seems to be fine. Maybe you crocheted into the wrong hole on one of the later bullions. One thing that I found helpful was to keep tightening the circle by pulling on the loose end of the yarn. Tighten the circle after you have two or three bullions made on the circle and periodically in between adding more bullions. This seems to keep the bullion stitches in order and makes it a lot easier to see what you're doing.

When you have made enough bullions and are ready to close the circle, just look for the chain of stitches coming off the center of the circle. I had to practice this tutorial several times before getting a halfway decent result. It's still a challenge for me to make the individual bullion stitches look even and nice.

nice photo! interesting. at first i wasn't sure if it was a collage or not, but then i realized that you had placed your version in front of the photo. looks very complicated, but neat. you should try it again.

ok, i just tried to follow the directions and i couldn't even get the first bullion made. does it matter what kind of yarn you use? congrats on your most recent success!!

i don't know about yarn weights/needle sizes since i'm not that experienced in making them. i was using a pretty thin yarn with a size g (i think?) needle---not a small one. i can't seem to find the needle right now or else i'd tell you... and i can't give more specifics about the yarn b/c it's one that inherited from a friend of mine... anyway, i don't think it's the right size needle based on the thickness of yarn. i can try it with a thicker yarn and let you know how it goes...

That's really cool. I really like how you contrasted the tutorial and your first attempt. I'm a big fan of the green yarn that you choose too.
